Proper name [Dutch]

IPA: /ˈbeː.səl/ Audio: Nl-Beesel.ogg
Rhymes: -eːsəl Etymology: First attested as Bisela in 1173. Potentially a compound of bies (“bulrush, Scirpus”) and lo (“open place in a forest”). Proposed derivations from Middle Dutch bise (“hind”) or bise (“black”), bize are incorrect; all three terms are loans from Middle French, and Beesel was located outside of the sphere of influence of the Romance languages. Compare Beesd, Bisselt and Lage Bijssel. See also Limburgish Bezel.
