Noun [Korean]

IPA: [o̞ɡɯɾo̞ɡɯɭ] [SK-Standard, Seoul] Forms: ogeurogeul [romanization]
Etymology: Reduplication of 오글 (ogeul, ideophonic root), which is itself a neologism apparently related to the verbs 오그리다 (ogeurida, “to bend inwards (transitive)”) and 오그라들다 (ogeuradeulda, “to bend inwards (intransitive)”), most likely via the figurative sense of the fingers clenching while recoiling in embarrassment. Some Korean-language Internet sites claim a specific 2002 Internet meme as the origin, but this is difficult to verify; in any case, the word is popular in real life as well as of 2020. Etymology templates: {{ko-l|오글|ideophonic root}} 오글 (ogeul, ideophonic root), {{ko-l|오그리다|to bend inwards (transitive)}} 오그리다 (ogeurida, “to bend inwards (transitive)”), {{ko-l|오그라들다|to bend inwards (intransitive)}} 오그라들다 (ogeuradeulda, “to bend inwards (intransitive)”) Head templates: {{ko-pos|ideophone}} 오글오글 • (ogeurogeul)

"etymology_text": "Reduplication of 오글 (ogeul, ideophonic root), which is itself a neologism apparently related to the verbs 오그리다 (ogeurida, “to bend inwards (transitive)”) and 오그라들다 (ogeuradeulda, “to bend inwards (intransitive)”), most likely via the figurative sense of the fingers clenching while recoiling in embarrassment.\nSome Korean-language Internet sites claim a specific 2002 Internet meme as the origin, but this is difficult to verify; in any case, the word is popular in real life as well as of 2020.",
