Noun [Korean]

IPA: [mik͈uɾi] [SK-Standard, Seoul] Forms: mikkuri [romanization]
Etymology: First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 믯구리〮 (Yale: mùyskwùlí). The noun is derived from the ideophonic root *muyskul "slippery" not directly attested in Middle Korean itself, whence Modern Korean 미끌미끌 (mikkeulmikkeul, “slipperily (ideophone)”) and 미끌하다 (mikkeulhada, “to be slippery”), and the Middle Korean derived adjective 믯그럽다 (Yale: muyskul-ep-ta) > Modern 미끄럽다 (mikkeureopda, “to be slippery”). Hence literally "slippery one". The word meant "loach" in general until around 1900, and still partially retains the wider meaning in taxonomy. See also 미꾸라지 (mikkuraji, “Chinese pond loach”).
