Noun [Japanese]

IPA: [ka̠t͡ɕɨːɕa̠] Forms: kachūsha [romanization]
Etymology: Borrowing from Russian Катюша (Katjuša), as in Katyusha Maslova, the female protagonist of Leo Tolstoy's Resurrection. A stage play was adapted from Tolstoy's novel, and the female lead was played by Sumako Matsui (1886-1919). Due to the popularity of theatre in the Taisho period, headbands and other Western accessories were sold to represent her image, and the character name stuck.
