Adverb [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /an.ti.kry̌ː/, /an.tiˈkry/, /an.diˈkri/, /an.ti.kry̌ː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /an.tiˈkry/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /an.tiˈkry/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /an.tiˈkry/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /an.diˈkri/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan) Forms: ἀντικρῡ́ [canonical], antikrū́ [romanization]
Etymology: Assuming a compound with ἀντι- (anti-, “opposite, against”) does not help much; the connection with ἀντικρούω (antikroúō, “to come into collision”), suggested by Kretschmer, is improbable, as are other attempts, like a derivation from ἀντι- (anti-, “against”) + κάρα (kára, “head”). Beekes and Cuypers argue that the -υ is short, but metrically lengthened in Homer. Beekes does not exclude a Pre-Greek etymology. Etymology templates: {{af|grc|ἀντι-|κάρα|t1=against|t2=head}} ἀντι- (anti-, “against”) + κάρα (kára, “head”), {{der|grc|qsb-grc|-}} Pre-Greek Head templates: {{grc-adverb|head=ἀντικρῡ́}} ἀντικρῡ́ • (antikrū́)
