Proper name [Yoruba]

IPA: /ɔ̀.jɛ̀.kú/ Forms: Ọ̀yẹ̀kú [canonical]
Etymology: Folk etymology suggests it comes from ọ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + yẹ̀ (“to avoid, to dodge”) + ikú (“death”), literally “That which avoids death”. It is a possibility that the root term may relate to kú (to die) as the second part of the term stays relatively consistently throughout Volta-Niger languages, and kwu or ku is generally associated with old roots for death, however, in some cognate terms, it changes, so that assertion is unlikely, but possible. See Gun Ìyẹ̀kú, Itsekiri Akú, Igala Ọyẹkwu, Igala Akwu, Edo Àkó, Urhobo Àkó, Igbo Àhwụ, Nupe Eyako, Ebira Ọ̀hàkú. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *V-kwú Etymology templates: {{affix|yo|ọ̀-|yẹ̀|ikú|lit=That which avoids death|t1=nominalizing prefix|t2=to avoid, to dodge|t3=death}} ọ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + yẹ̀ (“to avoid, to dodge”) + ikú (“death”), literally “That which avoids death”, {{l|yo|kú}} kú, {{cog|guw|Ìyẹ̀kú}} Gun Ìyẹ̀kú, {{cog|its|Akú}} Itsekiri Akú, {{cog|igl|Ọyẹkwu}} Igala Ọyẹkwu, {{cog|igl|Akwu}} Igala Akwu, {{cog|bin|Àkó}} Edo Àkó, {{cog|urh|Àkó}} Urhobo Àkó, {{cog|ig|Àkwụ|Àhwụ}} Igbo Àhwụ, {{cog|nup|Eyako}} Nupe Eyako, {{cog|igb|Ọ̀hàkú}} Ebira Ọ̀hàkú, {{inh|yo|alv-yrd-pro|*V-kwú}} Proto-Yoruboid *V-kwú Head templates: {{head|yo|proper noun|head=Ọ̀yẹ̀kú|head2=}} Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, {{yo-pos|proper noun|Ọ̀yẹ̀kú}} Ọ̀yẹ̀kú, {{yo-prop|Ọ̀yẹ̀kú}} Ọ̀yẹ̀kú

"etymology_text": "Folk etymology suggests it comes from ọ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + yẹ̀ (“to avoid, to dodge”) + ikú (“death”), literally “That which avoids death”. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *V-kwú",
