Noun [Georgian]

IPA: /ʃno/ Forms: šno [romanization], შნოები [plural]
Etymology: Borrowed from Old Armenian շնորհ (šnorh), from Iranian. Vogt is sceptical because of -ր- (-r-), but the form can be explained by borrowing from later Armenian *շնոհ (*šnoh), which is attested in Middle Armenian compounds, such as շնոհ-ւոր (šnoh-wor). Alternatively, a native formation fom Proto-Kartvelian *šw-en- ~ *šw-n- (“to decorate; to be proper, befit”), whence Georgian შვენება (šveneba), მშვენიერი (mšvenieri) etc. Gippert calls this derivation phonetically untenable.
