Root [Sanskrit]

IPA: /tɾuʈ/ [Vedic], /t̪ɾuʈ/ [Classical-Sanskrit] Forms: truṭ [romanization]
Etymology: Of uncertain origin. Mayrhofer rejects the connections made by Johansson and Morgenstierne to Latvian trusls (“fragile”) and Proto-Slavic *truditi (“to toil”), and prefers Tedesco's derivation from तृद् (tṛd, “to cleave, destroy”), via a series of sound changes तृणत्ति (tṛṇatti) > *तृत्त (tṛtta) > *त्रुट्ट (truṭṭa) > त्रुट् (truṭ), albeit with reservations about the chronology of the root's derived terms. Alternatively, borrowed from a local substrate. Etymology templates: {{uncertain|sa|nocap=1}} uncertain, {{noncog|lv|trusls|t=fragile}} Latvian trusls (“fragile”), {{noncog|sla-pro|*truditi|t=to toil}} Proto-Slavic *truditi (“to toil”) Head templates: {{head|sa|root|head=|tr=}} त्रुट् • (truṭ), {{sa-root}} त्रुट् • (truṭ)
  1. to be torn or split, tear, break, fall asunder Tags: morpheme Synonyms: त्रोट् (troṭ) Derived forms: तुत्रोट (tutroṭa), त्रुटति (truṭati), त्रुट्यति (truṭyati), त्रोटयति (troṭayati), त्रोटयते (troṭayate), त्रोटयित्वा (troṭayitvā)
