Noun [Arabic]

IPA: /qa.miːsˤ/ Audio: Ar-قميص.ogg
Etymology: Probably from Latin camisia, from Proto-Germanic *hamiþiją. Compare Classical Syriac ܩܡܝܨܬܐ (qamīṣtā, “shirt; undershirt”). A minority of scholars think that the Latin word is indeed borrowed from Semitic. The principal witness for this theory is a Ugaritic form /qms/, seemingly meaning “garment”. However, this word is not attested in any other old Semitic language. "etymology_text": "Probably from Latin camisia, from Proto-Germanic *hamiþiją. Compare Classical Syriac ܩܡܝܨܬܐ (qamīṣtā, “shirt; undershirt”).\nA minority of scholars think that the Latin word is indeed borrowed from Semitic. The principal witness for this theory is a Ugaritic form /qms/, seemingly meaning “garment”. However, this word is not attested in any other old Semitic language.",
