Noun [Persian]

IPA: [ʔa.poːʃ] [Classical-Persian], [ʔä.pʰoːʃ] [Dari, formal], [ʔä.pʰoːʃ] [Dari, formal], [ʔä.pʰoːʃ] [Kabuli], [ʔä.pʰʊːʃ] (note: Hazaragi), [ʔæ.pʰuːʃ] [Iran, formal], [ʔä.pʰɵʃ] [Tajik, formal] Forms: apuš [romanization]
Etymology: From Middle Persian ʾpwš (apōš), from Avestan 𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬋𐬱𐬀 (apaōša), derived from Proto-Iranian *apauša (“unthriving”). Earlier interpretations included Proto-Iranian *apa-uša (“burning away”), however for phonetical reasons this is impossible. Traditional folk etymology in the Dādestān ī Dēnīg interpreted it as āb (water) + ōš (destruction), "(having) the destruction of water".
