Noun [Middle Armenian]

Forms: čandari [romanization]
Etymology: Together with Georgian ჭანდარი (č̣andari), ჭადარი (č̣adari, “plane tree; poplar”) borrowed from an unidentified Iranian source, + -ի (-i, “tree-suffix”). Martirosyan offers several proposals. * From Iranian *čana(h)-dāra- (literally “auspicious tree”) and connected with Middle Persian cynʾl (činar, “oriental plane tree”); see the latter for more. * From Iranian *čand-dār- (literally “quaking tree”), with *čand- (“to tremble, quake”) (compare Middle Persian cnd-ytn' (čand-īdan, “to tremble, quake”)). Typologically compare Lithuanian drebulė̃ (“quaking aspen”) from drebė́ti (“to quiver”), English quaking aspen, etc. * From homonymous Iranian *čand-dār- (literally “white or shining tree”), originally referring to white poplar, with *čand- (“to shine”). Typologically compare Ancient Greek λεύκη (leúkē, “white poplar, Populus alba”), from λευκός (leukós, “clear, white”). In any case, the underlying Middle Iranian tree name seems to be composed with *dā́ru (“wood, tree”). Note also Tabasaran чаланда́р (čalandár, “plane tree, poplar”), чаламди́р (čalamdír, “plane tree”).
