Etymology: From Proto-Slavic *pòlmy (“flame”) + -ѧ (-ję) with Old Pskovian dialectal (Krivichs area) reflex of pleophony *TolT > *TolᵊT, *TolᵒT, and from which -олэ- (-olɛ-), -олы- (-oly-) apparently originate, found in Northern Russian dialects. Cognate with Old East Slavic поломѧ (polomę), Old Ruthenian по́ломѧ (pólomja), where the normal East Slavic pleophony *TolT > ToloT.
