Noun [Russian]

IPA: [plʲʊsˈna]
Etymology: Inherited from Old East Slavic плесна (plesna), from Proto-Slavic *pľusna, an alternative form of *plesno, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pl(j)ousk-. Pokorny compares Latin plautus (“flatfooted”), Latin plaudo (“I applaud”), Ancient Greek πλαίσιον (plaísion, “oblong case”), but a shared origin for all of these words is far from certain; possibly Proto-Indo-European *pleth₂- (“flat”). Cognate with Latvian plauksta. Also compare плюск (pljusk, “flattened spot”).
