Etymology: Borrowed from Tatar куян (quyan, “hare”) ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kodan (“hare”). According to Fedotov, Yegorov and Räsänen, Eastern Mari мераҥ (meraŋ) and Western Mari морен (moren) are compounds and the second part of the word was borrowed from the native variant of the word, *хуран (*huran). See also морен (moren). Cognate with Uzbek quyon, Bashkir ҡуян (quyan) and Tuvan кодан (kodan).
