See τορύνη on Wiktionary

Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /to.ry̌ː.nɛː/, /toˈry.ni/, /toˈri.ni/, /to.ry̌ː.nɛː/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /toˈry.ne̝/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /toˈry.ni/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /toˈry.ni/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /toˈri.ni/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: The formation is similar to κορύνη (korúnē), σιβύνη (sibúnē) and χελύνη (khelúnē). Semantically, one could connect Old English þweran (“to stir”) and þwirel (“stick for whipping milk”). Yet formally this etymology is implausible, since it would require a zero grade *τυρ-ύνη (*tur-únē). Derivation from the root of τείρω (teírō, “to oppress, distress, weaken”) is semantically difficult. Latin trua (“ladle”) has the same meaning, but the form cannot be reconciled with that of this word. In view of the suffix -υν-, the word could be Pre-Greek.
