Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /kai̯.á.daːs/, /cɛˈa.ðas/, /ceˈa.ðas/, /kai̯.á.daːs/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /kɛˈa.das/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /cɛˈa.ðas/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ceˈa.ðas/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ceˈa.ðas/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: The connection with Sanskrit केवट (kevaṭa, “pit, hollow”) must be rejected, and we cannot reconstruct Proto-Indo-European *kaiyr-t. The word καιετός (kaietós, “fissure produced by an earthquake”) may be a reshaping after ὀχετός (okhetós). According to Beekes, it is clearly a Pre-Greek word.
