Noun [Lithuanian]

Etymology: Cognate with Latvian osa, Old Prussian ansis (“hook, latch”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ans-, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂emseh₂ (compare Latin ānsa (“handle”), Proto-Germanic *ansijō (“handle, loop”)). Similarity with Proto-Germanic *ansaz (“beam”) has been discussed in the literature, although it is unclear. Compare also Proto-Finnic *ansa, which is borrowed from the Balto-Slavic root.
