Adjective [Azerbaijani]

IPA: [œˈɟej], [œˈɟæj] Audio: LL-Q9292 (aze)-Azerbaijani audiorecordings-ögey.wav
Etymology: From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (ögey), from Proto-Turkic *ögey, cognate with Turkish üvey. In Azerbaijani, non-initial /-g-/ has evolved to /-j-/, whereas in Turkish it has evolved to /-v-/, compare Turkish dövmek vs. Azerbaijani döymək, both from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (dögmek, “to beat”); Turkish sövmek vs. Azerbaijani söymək, both from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (sögmek, “to swear”). Turkish üvey (“step-”) therefore demonstrates a regular phonological development, while the Azerbaijani term unexpectedly preserves the intervocalic /-g-/ instead of the expected /-j-/, which would yield *öyey. Further cognates Crimean Tatar ögey Turkmen öweý, Tatar үги (ügi), Bashkir үгәй (ügəy), Kazakh өгей (ögei), Kyrgyz өгөй (ögöy), Southern Altai ӧй (öy), Crimean Tatar ögey, Uzbek oʻgay, Uyghur ئوگەي (ogey), Khakas ӧӧй, etc. Etymology templates: {{inh|az|trk-oat|tr=ögey}} Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (ögey), {{inh|az|trk-pro|*ögey}} Proto-Turkic *ögey, {{cog|tr|üvey}} Turkish üvey, {{cog|tr|üvey||step-}} Turkish üvey (“step-”), {{cog|crh|ögey}} Crimean Tatar ögey, {{cog|tk|öweý}} Turkmen öweý, {{cog|tt|үги}} Tatar үги (ügi), {{cog|ba|үгәй}} Bashkir үгәй (ügəy), {{cog|kk|өгей}} Kazakh өгей (ögei), {{cog|ky|өгөй}} Kyrgyz өгөй (ögöy), {{cog|alt|ӧй}} Southern Altai ӧй (öy), {{cog|crh|ögey}} Crimean Tatar ögey, {{cog|uz|oʻgay}} Uzbek oʻgay, {{cog|ug|ئوگەي}} Uyghur ئوگەي (ogey), {{cog|kjh|ӧӧй}} Khakas ӧӧй Head templates: {{head|az|adjective}} ögey
