Suggested be from Proto-Iranian *háxā (“friend”), however the expected outcome in Proto-Scythian would be *haxā, + *θrauš- ~ *θruš- (“prospering”), modified by θύρσος (thúrsos, “thyrsus, the composite vegetal wand of Bacchus”) “via an association of Scythians peoples with Bacchic rites”, however no Iranian cognate meaning “prospering” is given.
